Ael Tobrans at the Rock

Introduction

Ael Tobrans at the Rock is a Laranian monastary which dates back to the twelfth century.

Physical Description

The descriptive name of the monastary stems from the story of its founding, in which Ael Tobran saw upon a large rock certain marks or signs which revealed to him that this was the place to build his retreat. The rock is still there, beside the chapel, though none have since seen in its rough surface anything other than natural pits and cracks.

History

A number of documents detail numerous aspects of Ael Tobrans' history. For the early years, the Diary of Ael Tobran and Miro's Life of Ael Tobran give valuable insights into the general life of the monastary, while there are also monastic records of appointments. Another important document is the Rule of Ael Aramas which was used in the monastery, though not without some adaptations, it appears. For while the oldest copies in the library are accurate copies of the standard text, later copies incorporate a number of systematic changes which can only have been deliberate. These changes presumably reflect the reality of life at Ael Tobran's some years after its founding.
