Markyn has two other notable duties. He is occasionally called upon to give the dawn service for the assembled Meken in the courtyard (while Leda gives a counterpart to the nobles in the chapel). Normally, however, the Meken manage without him. The second duty is that of reading the religious texts. Each evening, after the evening meal, Markyn retreats to the chapel and reads aloud from one or other of the sacred texts for an hour. All are welcome to come and listen, in particular those who lack skill enough in reading to manage by themselves. Often the texts to be read from that evening will be announced in the morning; however, requests can be made even at the time, if there are few present.
