Beneath the Golden Moon

Ashesa Markyn of Kail

Name and position
Markyn of Kail, Ashesa to Chaplain Matakea Leda of Serverwen

Physical description
Markyn stands about 5'11" and weighs about 175 lbs. He has deep black hair and soft brown eyes. He has a ruddy complexion and is quite handsome. His hair is cropped short in the acolyte fashion. He has a pleasant voice, in contrast to most of those at Menekod. He can usually be seen wearing his Ashesa's robes. During the summer months, he refrains from wearing the robes and instead wears a surcoat.

Personal history
Markyn arrived at Menekod with the chaplain, Leda of Severwen, some four years ago.

Duties
Markyn's duties are somewhat different from those of Ashesa serving in temples and churches. His primary function is of course to assist Chaplain Leda; this in general means menial tasks such as fetching, carrying, scribing, lighting candles, and helping in preparation for festivals. Markyn also provides the lead in any singing that occurs in Menekod.

Markyn has two other notable duties. He is occasionally called upon to give the dawn service for the assembled Meken in the courtyard (while Leda gives a counterpart to the nobles in the chapel). Normally, however, the Meken manage without him. The second duty is that of reading the religious texts. Each evening, after the evening meal, Markyn retreats to the chapel and reads aloud from one or other of the sacred texts for an hour. All are welcome to come and listen, in particular those who lack skill enough in reading to manage by themselves. Often the texts to be read from that evening will be announced in the morning; however, requests can be made even at the time, if there are few present.

Friends and associates
Markyn is friendly with a number of the younger servants about the castle. He can also be found lingering near the Melana when he is not busy with his tasks. In the performance of his duties he naturally associates with numerous members of the keep, members of the nobility in particular.
