With no notice whatsoever, two changelings turned up on the doorstep of Waldren House, declaring themselves to be Mr Bun, an officious Boggan, and Valis, a Sluagh, investigators at large. Mr Bun, who did most of the talking, explained how Valis had prophetic headaches, and that it was precisely one such which alerted them to an unusual and dangerous phenomenon at Waldren House, which they had come to investigate, should such employment agree with Lady Catherine. Although handling themselves with utmost politeness, Catherine was suspicious of even their claimed references, and got them out of the house as quickly as possible, asking them to call again at five the next day (carefully scheduled to be an hour after her meeting with the household).
Lady Catherine had another episode in the house where things were not as they should be. After having her morning shower and drying herself in the bathroom, the shower started seemingly of its own accord, and the water sounded as if it were falling onto and from a person. Just as Lady Catherine pulled back the shower curtain, the water stopped - only it was less water than leaves and assorted vegetation - and she caught a glimpse of a long, pale hand and arm disappearing down the drain hole.
During the previous night Lady Catherine had also been disturbed by Robert, who had tromped through the house into the garden in order to try out his plan. This was to go down the garden paths trailing a clothesline he had stolen (in conversation with the Knocker (?) he became convinced that it was a vampire's clothesline, for who else would have one out at night?), and see what happened after all the paths had a line in it. He was just about to set off down the middle path, with the line already going in the left hand path and out the right hand path, when he was interrupted and called back by Lady Catherine. She was unimpressed with Robert's timing, as well as doing things by himself, and told him to wait until the meeting the next day, when everyone would be there to discuss the matter.
